Open source browser-based cryptocurrency wallet Telescope has officially announced its acquisition by Bitmain Technologies Inc., the world’s largest crypto mining rig manufacturer, which also runs one of the world’s most extensive cryptocurrency mining pools. The move comes at an important time for Bitmain, which is increasing its involvement in the bitcoin cash space as it continues to reinvent itself as more than just an ASIC maker ahead of its planned mega-IPO in Hong Kong.

Telescope is a browser-embedded cryptocurrency wallet that currently allows users of Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox to send and receive BCH through a browser extension. Set up earlier in 2018 by former IBM software engineer Aaron Angert, Telescope also offers support for BitPay and MoneyButton. While it is currently optimized for Chrome and Firefox, the plan is for the application to eventually offer full support for other leading browsers as the project grows.

Telescope transaction keys are saved in the application’s browser extension, and then transactions are signed by the user’s browser directly and sent to a BCH block explorer....

South Korea to Double Public Sector Blockchain Trials Next Year

The South Korean government is literally doubling down on its efforts to trial blockchain in the public sector, adding more projects and increasing available funds for 2019.

The Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) – a sub-organization of the Ministry of ICT – has said it is aiming to increase the number of blockchain pilot projects in the public sector from six this year to 12 in 2019, as CoinDesk Korea reported on Tuesday.

"In the next year, we are considering expanding blockchain pilot projects in the public sector to 12, and plan to support more than three private-led blockchain national projects," said Min Kyung-sik, head of KISA's blockchain team.

Further, the government agency will also boost the blockchain pilot budget for 2019 to more than 10 billion Korean won,...

Opera Wallet Now Sends CryptoKitties and Other Digital Collectibles

Opera now allows users to send crypto collectibles, such as CryptoKitties, directly from its recently announced in-browser crypto wallet.

Claiming the feature is a first for the industry – although other wallets do offer collectibles support, including MetaMask – the company said in a blog post today:

"We believe that as an increasing portion of our lives moves online, so will our collections of things."

As a result, users of the beta-stage wallet can send their crypto-collectibles to others, something it said previously required use of a digital marketplace and an exchange transaction to transfer ownership.

The Opera team said it believes the crypto collectibles trend is "just getting started," and that, as the tech develops and becomes more...

California Finalizes Blockchain Legislature Working Group

California may soon be forming a working group to examine the potential benefits of blockchain to the state – and how best to update laws to make use of the technology.

California bill 2658, first introduced in February 2018, originally recognized "a record that is secured through blockchain technology is an electronic record," as previously reported. However, the final version as of Monday now directs the Secretary of the Government Operations Agency to create a blockchain working group to study the technology instead.

It also adds that "for the purpose of this chapter, 'blockchain' means a mathematically secured, chronological, and decentralized ledger or database," though this definition is temporary and will expire by January 2022.

The working group, whose chairperson will be designated no later than July 1, 2019, will include members from within the technology industry, as well as representatives from related fields. Stakeholders will be able to provide input to the group, which will...

TokenMarket 2018 Summit Update: Introducing TokenMarket Cap

TokenMarket Summit Director of Marketing Tom Leadbetter announced updates to the main tokenmarket.net website and introduced TokemMarket Cap.

TokenMarket Summit

Leading with the goal of the original TokenMarket site, “to help users better unearth information about crypto & blockchain project, allowing them to make decisions on where they invest their time and resource”, Tom went on to explain that while the site has provided this information to all users, the market has moved on.

He went on to describe the disconnect between what they had identified in the market between current ICO and Token/coin listing sites, “If you follow the current iterations of these portals, each site assumes that these business operates in siloed manner. Where in...

Winklevoss Loss at the SEC

The US Securities and Exchange Commission issued its disapproval of  proposed rule changes that would have allowed the listing and trading of the Winklevoss Bitcoin Trust on the Bats BZX Exchange. The “Winklevoss Bitcoin Trust,” as its name might suggest, is the creation of Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, notorious figures in the prehistory of Facebook, and ubiquitous figures in the world of Bitcoin.

Technically the SEC decision on Thursday reaffirmed an earlier Disapproval Order, in March of this year. Bats BZX had petitioned for review of that disapproval order, and the SEC gave it a full-dress second look, a de novo review, giving “careful consideration to the entire record, including … all comments and statements submitted by BZX and other parties,” only to decide that the agency had gotten things right the first time.

The decision was not a unanimous one. Commissioner Hester Peirce dissented. The significance of the defeat of this proposal in the bigger picture of cryptocurrency history may be the extent to which her dissent throws light upon her thinking on the broad subject: she is the newest Commissioner, having just been confirmed in December 2017.

Tezos Foundation Engages ‘Big Four’ Firm PwC for Independent Audit

Major auditing firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Switzerland has agreed to conduct an independent audit of the Tezos Foundation’s finances and operations, the foundation announced on Monday.

PwC, considered one of the “Big Four” auditing firms, will review the finances of the Tezos Foundation, which is holding hundreds of millions of dollars worth of cryptocurrencies and other assets raised from the project’s then-record initial coin offering (ICO) in summer 2017.

In a statement, the foundation — which underwent a major reshuffle earlier this year following months of infighting between Tezos creators Arthur and Kathleen Breitman and former foundation President Johann Gevers — stated that the audit is indicative of its commitment to operate with the “highest degree of integrity.”

“The Foundation is committed to operating with the highest degree of integrity in the service of our mission to support the Tezos protocol, ecosystem, and community. Engaging a top-tier independent external auditor ensures that the Tezos community and its observers can trust our operations...
